Expansion of nuclear energy is a key contributor to combating climate change

Almost one quarter of global electricity could be generated from nuclear power by 2050, making a major contribution to cutting greenhouse gas emissions. This is the central finding of the Nuclear Energy Technology Roadmap, published today by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA). Such an expansion will require nuclear generating capacity to more than triple over the next 40 years, a target the roadmap describes as ambitious but achievable.

Belene NPP and its prospects are among the main topics discussed at the conference of the Bulgarian Atomic Forum under the heading “Bulgarian Nuclear Sector – national, regional and global energy security”. The forum took place in the Riviera complex between 9 – 11 June, 2010.

Despite the difficulties in the project, the representatives of some key institutions working on it feel optimistic about its future.

EU supports European nuclear investment in Belene

On 2 March, the Energy Commissioner, Günther Öttinger, said it favoured a European private investor for the completion of the Belene nuclear project in Bulgaria during an international forum on energy security in the Black Sea region. He declared that the EU would lend its support to the country to find one. "We are very cautious about this project. We are aware of Bulgaria's existing contracts, which it should meet. But we also have a marked interest in having European participation in the project. We will hold active consultations to harmonise Bulgaria's interest in the project with that of the EU." , declared Öttinger.
