Sergey Shmatko about Belene NPP

Sergey Shmatko: „Belene NPP doesn’t need state loan for project financing”

„Under the changed market conditions for nuclear plants construction, state financing for these projects is not necessary anymore. I know well that solid financial groups are interested in the Belene NPP construction project. With this financial interest, with their willingness to invest, why should Bulgarian government assume the risk of such a construction”, the President of Atomstroyexport, Sergey Shmatko, said in an interview to Darik Radio on 01 December 2006.
According to the Atomstroyexport president there are no reasons for delaying the project over the defined timeframe. All issue that may arise in this type of project are well known to the Russian company from their experience with the construction of similar units in India. The circumstances in Bulgaria are much more favorable, as the Bulgarian regulatory bodies and the Client are well familiar with the proposed technology. This will significantly facilitate all processes related to the finalization and approvals in the course of work. Sergey Shmatko did not commit however to assess the political risk, resulting from the relation of the nuclear business with the geopolitical situation.
